What Is an Elopement?

Traditionally, the term “elopement” described a secretive wedding without family or celebration—often held hastily and far from home. But modern elopements have transformed into something entirely different. Today’s elopements are about choosing intimacy and personal meaning. They may include just the couple and officiant, perhaps with a small group of loved ones (up to around 10 guests). They are typically held in a meaningful setting with thoughtful planning and professional photography.

An elopement is not about foregoing celebration—it’s about tailoring your wedding day to what matters most to you.

Why Trout Creek, Montana Can Be a Great Place for an Elopement

Montana is becoming a popular elopement destination in the U.S. The charm of Trout Creek makes it an especially wonderful place for a peaceful, scenic, and memorable elopement in Montana.

Fewer People and Less Crowds

Unlike more populated locations that are beautiful but may at times be filled with tourists, Montana and Trout Creek can offer quiet spaces and room to breathe. Chances are you won’t be competing for space on a scenic overlook or waiting for crowds to clear. Your special day can remain truly yours—undisturbed by busy foot traffic or noise.

Secluded Location and Small Town “Feel”

Trout Creek is nestled in Montana’s northwestern region, offering the kind of small-town warmth and hospitality that can make you feel welcome. For couples who value peace and privacy, this charming town can provide a comforting escape from the pressures of everyday life.

Majestic Scenery

Montana’s nickname, “Big Sky Country,” lives up to the landscape. Mountains, forests, meadows, shimmering water, and boundless skies surround Trout Creek, offering numerous options for an elopement ceremony and photos. Whether you say your vows at sunrise on the reservoir or beneath a canopy of trees in the late afternoon, you’ll be immersed in natural splendor.

Proximity to Hiking Trails and Local Attractions

Outdoor-loving couples will enjoy easy access to nearby hiking trails such as those leading to Kootenai Falls or Rock Lake. Trout Creek also offers access to Noxon Reservoir for boating and fishing—making your elopement in Montana not just a ceremony, but a full experience.

Basic Steps in Planning an Elopement in Montana

While an elopement typically requires less planning than a traditional wedding, it still involves important decisions and logistics. Here are key steps for a successful elopement in Montana.

1. Decide What You Want Your Wedding and Your Day to Be

Before picking a location or date, spend time thinking about your vision. Do you want your elopement to be just the two of you, or would you like to include a few family members or friends? Would you prefer an early morning hike to a mountainous location where you can exchange vows, or a more formal evening ceremony by Noxon Reservoir? Eloping gives you full creative freedom—so dream big, and then simplify as needed.

2. Budget for Wedding Costs

Even an elopement has associated expenses. Be sure to plan a budget that may include:

  • Transportation
  • Lodging
  • Officiant
  • Marriage license
  • Special Use Permit (If the ceremony will be held on protected lands, a Special Use Permit may be needed.)
  • Photographer and/or videographer
  • Wedding attire and rings
  • Hair stylist and makeup artist
  • Light refreshments or a celebratory meal
  • Florist and decor (if desired)

Elopements can be a budget-friendly alternative to traditional weddings, but that doesn’t mean cutting out all the beauty. Many couples invest in photography and special touches that make the day feel just as meaningful.

3. Choose the Date and Season

Each Montana season offers unique beauty—but also comes with its own considerations.

  • Spring: Wildflowers and foliage begin to return, and some mountain peaks still may be covered in snow, making for dramatic landscapes. But some roads, hiking trails, and businesses may not yet be open, and the weather can be rainy and the terrain muddy.
  • Summer: Long, sunny days make for great lighting and accessibility. Roads, trails, and businesses are fully open. For hikers, high-elevation lakes and waterfalls should be fully thawed by early to mid-July. But popular spots may be more crowded with tourists.
  • Fall: Crisp air, colorful leaves, and cooler temperatures offer a magical atmosphere. But early snows are possible and may affect access to some potential wedding locations. Having a backup location can be helpful during this time of year.
  • Winter: Snowy landscapes can create a romantic and intimate atmosphere. But with the cold and snow this season is known for, travel and wedding location access may be limited. Some roads, hiking trails, and businesses are closed for the season.

Consider your comfort with weather and outdoor settings when choosing your elopement season in Montana.

4. Choose Vendors

An intimate wedding doesn’t mean skipping quality vendors. Many Montana-based professionals specialize in elopement services and are accustomed to working in outdoor environments. Your vendor list may include:

  • Local officiant
  • Photographer/Videographer
  • Hair stylist and makeup artist
  • Florist
  • Caterer or meal provider

Booking early is always a good idea, especially during peak wedding months (June through September, with July and August being the peak warm-weather months).

5. Apply for and Obtain Your Marriage License

In Montana, you can apply for your marriage license at a clerk of the district court office. Your license can be obtained in any county in Montana, and your ceremony can be held in any county in Montana.

Generally both applicants must be present to apply. Only Montana residents or active duty military can apply-by-proxy, and only one applicant of the pair can apply absentee.

Acceptable forms of ID include: driver’s license, state/military/tribal ID card, or birth certificate. Applicants can provide SSNs, but the cards may not need to be presented.

The marriage license will be issued immediately after application and is valid for 180 days. The license must be returned to the issuing district court for recording within 30 days following the ceremony. A certified copy of the marriage certificate can be obtained from the issuing district court. Some offices may provide the certified copy for free, while others may require a small fee (less than $10 in September 2025).

As of September 2025, the current marriage license fee is $53. For additional details on obtaining a marriage license in Montana, please visit individual county websites. Knowing the details can help ensure a smooth process for your elopement in Montana.

6. Research and Obtain Any Permits Needed

Planning to get married in a state or national park? In Montana state parks, a Special Use Permit is required for weddings. National parks generally require these permits as well. For example, Glacier National Park requires a Special Use Permit for weddings and has specific locations where weddings can be held. Permits are often inexpensive and help ensure your ceremony remains uninterrupted and is respectful to the land.

7. Book Travel and Accommodations

Montana is vast, and travel times between towns can be long. Make sure your elopement location is reasonably close to where you’ll be staying. Accommodations at Lakeside Motel & Resort, for example, offer scenic views, waterfront access, flexible lodging, and an on-site restaurant that can help make for a more relaxed wedding experience.

To secure your ideal dates and type of lodging, book your accommodations at least six months to a year in advance.

8. Set a Schedule for the Wedding Day

While you may not need a rigid timeline, it’s helpful to outline your plans so the day flows smoothly. Think through:

  • Getting ready time
  • First looks and pre-ceremony photos
  • Travel time to ceremony site
  • Ceremony
  • Post-ceremony photos and activities
  • Celebration meal (if desired)

At each point in the day, try to give yourself “time to breathe” so you can soak in every moment.

9. Plan Activities Following the Wedding

Montana is full of adventure. Whether you’re staying for a few days or longer, consider planning:

  • A celebratory dinner
  • A private boat ride
  • Fishing or kayaking
  • A scenic hike
  • Visiting nearby small towns

Your elopement can turn into an unforgettable honeymoon.

10. Have a Backup Plan in Case of Inclement Weather

Nature is beautiful, but it’s also unpredictable. Be ready with a “Plan B”—especially if your ceremony is fully outdoors. Having a covered location, such as a nearby lodge or conference room, can offer peace of mind.
